I joined Saltwell at the end of 2023 after being a solo runner for a few years. It’s been one of the best decisions I’ve made. I’ve really enjoyed being part of such a friendly and welcoming club and it’s helped me to step out of my warm and cosy comfort zone.
This year, I decided to take things a step further and become a Leader in Running Fitness (LiRF). The process was actually really interesting; starting with a virtual classroom day where I joined future LiRFs from clubs all over the country and covering coaching basics to group running safety.
After that, there were online modules to complete, including running technique, warm-ups, cool-downs, aswell as safeguarding and first aid, and how to support runners with different needs and abilities. There was never any time pressure which made it easy to fit around work and other commitments.
The final step was the scary practical bit — I had to submit a 10 minute video of me leading a session with at least three participants. I put together a session plan, led the warm-up, talked through pacing and safety, and tried my best not to sound like I was reading from a script (also big thanks to Karen for her excellent filming skills given I literally didn’t stand in the same spot for more than about 4 seconds!)
Now I’m officially a LiRF, I’m really looking forward to helping others enjoy running as much as I have since joining Saltwell. I’m still in the early days having just got my license so I’m definitely a combo of excitement and nerves to get started, but thankfully I’ve got a team of excellent coaches and LiRFS to learn from and keep me right.
